The Under 18s were once again punished for a slow start to each half as they fell to a 3 goal defeat against league leaders Godmanchester Rovers.

The side found themselves a goal down within a couple of minutes as Godmanchester counter attacked down their left and a drilled in cross was turned in at the back post by their striker.

Ely looked to compose themselves but were 2 down 10 minutes later as the away side's playmaker skipped through 3 challenges, and struck in to the far corner to double the lead.

The shock of the second goal saw the home side settle and managed to enjoy some good possession.

A good move saw Finn Cater release Mitch Drewiit down the left, his low cross narrowly missed by Josh Lewis for a tap-in.

A couple of left foot corners from Charlie Tunnell went close as Louie Diver challenged.

Godmanchester didn't really threaten on goal but saw out the half well

Disappointingly, the home side, looking to get back in to the game were hit with a crucial third goal early in the second half.

A well hit shot took a wicked deflection which took Joe Deas out of the game and looped in to the top corner.

Again, Ely were braver and more composed on the ball than in recent weeks but this play was forced into the middle third of the pitch by Godmanchester and Ely found it difficult to threaten the goal.

Josh Bateman had a shot blocked and Mitch Drewitt had a shot spilled by the keeper but collected at the second attempt

Godmanchester created a couple of chances, hitting the post from close range and forcing Deas in to a couple of outstanding stops as Ely tired

The young side have played worse this season and there were some positives to take whilst in possession of the ball, however, the ruthlessness seen in this league is something for the side to learn from
