Steve ‘Midge’ Green

The Club was very saddened to learn former player Steve ‘Midge’ Green recently had passed away at the age of 64.

Steve, as his nickname suggests, was a diminutive striker although physically very strong with a good turn of pace and an excellent finish. He had several spells with the Club in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. He made his debut in 1976/77 on loan from Cambridge City scoring in both of the matches he played against Gorleston and Thetford Town respectively.

Steve subsequently re-joined the Club in the 1978/79 season and was a member of the team that defeated Lowestoft Town 4 - 2 on aggregate to lift the 1980 Eastern Counties League Cup, with Midge featuring in the second leg played at the Paradise Ground. Undoubtedly his most successful season for the Robins was 1980/81 when he formed part of a prolific forward line-up comprising Green, Trevor Moden, Soapy Edwards and Gary Grogan. That team hit a century of ECL goals in a 4th place finish, with Midge contributing 15 that included a classy hattrick in a 4 - 4 draw with Colchester United Reserves. The following season, he was the Club’s top scorer with 13 goals in an ageing team that had begun to struggle and would continue to do so for the remainder of that decade. Steve continued to pull on the Red jersey at different times over several more seasons, but struggled to have the same level of impact in what were lesser teams. He ended his association with the First Team with a total of 44 goals in all competitions.

This short tribute obviously only focuses on Steve’s playing contribution for Ely City, but he played for numerous senior and junior Clubs during his lengthy career, including Cambridge City, King’s Lynn, Bury Town and Soham Town Rangers. Steve also had a long and close association with Sunday league sides Ely Crusaders and Ely Park Rangers. In addition, he was an expert on local football which he used to good effect for many years as a freelance sports journalist with the Ely Standard. In 2016 had a book published - Ely’s ‘Midge’Green - which charted his football journey from child to veteran. He described it as the ‘story of a six-foot-four centre forward in a five-foot-nine body’- which pretty much sums it up, as he will always be considered to be one of Ely City’s giants.

Steve was taken far too early, and the Club extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.
