Habbin masterminds cupset!

Tuesday evening the Robins took on higher league Newmarket Town in the semi final of the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup at the Demcom Stadium.
Newmarket Town now ply their trade in the Isthmian League North after winning the playoffs in the Thurlow Nunn Premier last season.
An bumper crowd of 298 saw a entertaining game with both sides wanting to face March Town in the final at Cambridge City's new ground at Sawston.
Newmarket named a strong lineup including a number of former Robins (Tom Williams, Ash Walter and Jordan Foster)
Newmarket grabbed a early lead with the number 8 Efrain Romanos finding the back of the net.
Ely slowly gained a foothold in the match and started to play with their usual confidence.
On 37mins Toby Lawal levelled up the scoreline slotting home after some good teamplay found him in the 18yrd box, his shot evading the away keeper to make it 1-1.
On 43 mins Robins striker Jack Friend was chasing down a long clearance with the Jockeys keeper rushing out and swinging his boot to clear it, unfortunately for him he miss kicked the ball and Friend went past him and slotted into a empty net to make the half time score 2-1 to a vocal Robins support.
The 2nd half produced good chances for both sides but the Robins remained the better team for most of it.
A few substitutes came on for both teams but the scoreline remained 2-1 and the Robins found themselves in the final on April 29th.
Another excellent all around team performance by the squad, it's a shame that we can only have one man of the match astheir were so many great performances.
Special praise needs to go out to Guy and Matt for creating such a dramatic upturn from last seasons form, they have given us a great team to watch that rewards the fans with a lot of memorable moments.

We now face a tough trip to Walsham Le Willows Saturday while Newmarket carry on their survival battle at home to Harringey Brough
