Gusty And Gutsy as Ely bag 3 more points in Promotion Race.

Ely City Football Club7 Mar - 16:24

Ely overcome stubborn Burwell

In a blowy morning at the Demcom, the game started pretty even as both teams struggled with the conditions.

Emma Cooper had the first chance on 10 minutes when a great cross from Beth Horsfield found her free at the back post, but she shot over on the stretch from close range. And she could have found the net 2 minutes later but for a smothering save on the line from the Burwell keeper.

Burwell created their own chances, as first Kerry Dyer cleared as the striker bore down on goal, before Cooper made an important tackle in her own box after the ball wasn’t cleared.

On 20 minutes, Amy Lloyd lofted a ball over the top for Kelly Docwra however she shot straight at the keeper.

Burwell again went close as a corner was flicked on, but a combination of Ellie Cooper and Dyer saw Ely clear their lines.

On 27 minutes, Ely found the net finally after the host of chances created. Some great work infield by Lou Harwood found Horsfield wide on the right. Her cross was missed by the covering defender, Tash Lane picked up the loose ball, held off her marker, and placed in from 8 yards, beating the Keeper at her near post.

5 minutes later and Ely doubled their lead. After more pressure from Ely, Docwra forced a corner. Horsfield’s delivery was pinpoint and Harwood rose highest at the near post to flick her header into the far corner for 2-0.

The Ely train started to gather pace, as the injection of pace into the game from Lane and Youngs created opening, before Christine Cullen’s charge down the left saw a dangerous ball deflect wide.

5 minutes before the break and it was practically game over- Lane and Lloyd combined well, before Docwra squeezed her way into the box and her left foot drive from 10 yards went in off the far post.

Second half demanded more tempo from the Reds, as they looked to camp within the Burwell half now playing into the wind.

Again Ely created chances, as sub Kaci Gibson exchanged passes with Horsfield, but her cross deceived Youngs at the near post.

Some good work down the left, again created by Cullen saw Lane this time cut inside and her delicious cross found Horsfield whose effort looped over the bar.

Burwell still maintained threat on the break, as a long ball over the top was missed by an Ely defender, but Ellie Cooper swept around to clear the danger.

Ely camped in the Burwell half but the away side dropping deep closed out any space for Youngs or sub Charlotte Lupson.

Into the last 10’and Burwell caught the Ely back line out, but Gibson tackled well to stop the chance on goal, before Vic Bailey volleyed clear.

Last chance of the game fell to Youngs for the Robins, but after working hard to get the ball out her feet in a crowded box, her shot was smothered by the away team Keeper.

FT; Ely City Women 3 - 0 Burwell Ladies

Although comfortable for the Robins, Burwell offered some worry at times which tested a side that’s not had any fixture momentum this calendar year. And that’s what was missing from the fluency of the game. But as every game, 100% effort in creating chances sees Ely get goals! Another three points towards a closing promotion chase!
