Ely City 0 Soham Town Rangers 3
Robins well beaten in Boxing Day derby by neighbours Soham Town
Ely City lineup: 1: Sarchett (GK), 2: Logan, 3: Wyman, 4: Hunt, 5: Bowen, 6: Walter ©, 7: Jenkins, 8: Munro, 9: Mullins-Hammond, 10: Townshend, 11: Varela
This was a game in which the clinical team who took their chances won the game. Ely began well and looked dangerous particularly because of the attacking intentions of Varela. The number 11 had a couple of really good runs into the Soham box inside the first ten minutes but couldn’t quite squeeze past the away defence.
The game then became open as Soham grew into the game. Ely had a glorious chance to open the scoring when Mullins-Hammond produced a terrific goal bound strike and forced a finger tip from the visiting goalkeeper and the ball went out for a corner.
A few minutes later- just before the twenty minutes- came the opening goal of the game. Soham had built a period of attacking pressure and a corner played in was headed home by Mulready.
This signified a real turning of momentum and despite City trying to rally back- it wasn’t really a shock to anyone in the crowd when Soham scored again from a corner just before half time.
HALF TIME Ely City 0 – Soham Town 2
The second half began in pretty much the same way as the first. Ely were dangerous without ever really looking like scoring and Soham were a constant threat on the counter.
Ely rarely threatened the goalkeeper but the Robin’s best attack in the second half came when Varela evaded the defence and floated a ball dangerously into the box but despite the best efforts of the home side’s attacking players- the ball was cleared away with aplomb.
The game finished with a superbly taken strike by Luke Brown who curled the ball into the corner of goal with just four minutes of normal time remaining.
A disappointing day all round for Ely who visit Haverhill Rovers on January 2nd before returning back to the Demcom on January 7th when Harleston Town visit.
